Enfleurage in Parallel, 2013

The Lavender Hinge have started their 2013 enfleurage, beginning with the  roses that are currently in bloom and then as the lavender comes into its fragrant full-ness, this too will be added to the shea butter bed. Currently the enfleurage is being created in parallel with a climbing garden rose in Providence and with civic roses in Brooklyn.

Legacy of Lace

Alice Palmer is currently part of an exhibition about the history of lace at The Dick Institute in Kilmarnock, Scotland which runs until 7th September 2013. The exhibition focuses on the Legacy of Lace that has been created by MYB Textiles which is now the only producer in the world manufacturing with original Nottingham Lace Looms, some of them over 90 years old. This manufacturing process is extremely labour intensive using traditional skills and processes which are passed on from generation to generation through MYB’s apprenticeships.

Spotted Joe-Pye Weed

A similar experience took place with the Spotted Joe-Pye Weed. Again all sign and yet no sign.

I shall have to return when the blooms are signalling their own presence.

Hollow-Stemmed Joe-Pye Weed

The only sign of the Hollow-Stemmed Joe-Pye Weed at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens was the sign.

However, curiosity being kindled, what a wonderful discovery to find that Joe-Pye Weed is indeed a glorious pink bloom.

Kama, Sex and Design

Design Behind Desire has been chosen to be part of the Kama, Sex and Design exhibition at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan; chosen as an object of desire within itself.

"The exhibition wants to investigate how sexuality incorporates itself in the things and makes them a medium of knowledge. For the designers, but also for the users."

The exhibition is open to the public from 5th December 2012 until 10th March 2013.

Capturing the Reverie

I wrote an article about Ryan McGinley which is available to read in Issue 2 of TWELV magazine.

The following is the opening paragraph to Capturing the Reverie:

Standing before the images created by Ryan McGinley, one becomes entranced by the irresistible visions of freedom and joyous irreverence. As we gaze upon these captured glimpses of nubile and ecstatic lives, the pace and perception of our own reality becomes, perhaps equally momentarily, transformed. It is as though we are inhabiting a dream, reliving a memory or visually absorbing a wish. There is ample room for us to imbue the imagery with our own imagination and narrative, and our mind wanderings encourage us to indulge in the ebullience of youth, whether that is the youth we have lived, recognize or are yet to comprehend. But regardless of our own position in time, the experience of witnessing a life in the present is persuasively clear.

About Me

My photo
Lisa Z. Morgan is an artist, designer and writer. The subject and object of desire has been a palpable constant within her artistic expression both as a motivation and in its embodiment or articulation. Through her creativity and research Morgan examines how the value of provenance, of rarity and storytelling, puts into question or provokes our understanding and relationship towards desire and the desire impulse. Her focus has been how we may access, stimulate and touch the internal points of registration or the emotional dynamics of bodily perception. In essence she attempts to define and make manifest the feeling of feeling. Her work inhabits a space where art, semiotics, design and fashion intersect. Morgan is the Co-Founder of STRUMPET & PINK and the Co-Founder of The Lavender Hinge. She is the author and creative editor of Design Behind Desire and also a contributor to SHOWstudio and The Laboratory Arts Collective.
